Choose the base rate
Select a preset or enter the species’ base catch rate. A higher value generally means an easier capture. The value is not the Pokémon’s level or its catch probability.
POKÉMON · CAPTURE ODDS
Check your chance of catching a Pokémon with one ball or a series of throws. Compare Poké Balls, Great Balls, and Ultra Balls using the normal battle rules of Pokémon Emerald.
These results use your current catch rate, HP, and status. Change one input to see which part of your setup makes the biggest difference.
| Ball | Bonus | Chance per throw |
|---|---|---|
| Poké Ball | 1× | — |
| Great Ball | 1.5× | — |
| Ultra Ball | 2× | — |
| Master Ball | Guaranteed in an eligible encounter | 100% |
Select a preset or enter the species’ base catch rate. A higher value generally means an easier capture. The value is not the Pokémon’s level or its catch probability.
Use the target’s actual current and maximum HP. Add its active status condition. If you only know the approximate HP left, treat the output as a planning estimate.
Choose a ball and review the single-throw chance alongside the comparison table. Use the throws field to estimate the probability of catching it at least once over repeated attempts.
Base catch rate is a species parameter between 1 and 255. Actual capture probability also depends on the encounter. A Pokémon with a rate of 45 does not automatically have a 45% chance of being caught.
The presets load a base rate only. They do not claim that every Pokémon shown is available as a wild encounter in Emerald. Custom input lets you examine other species or a hypothetical encounter.
Weakening the target improves the HP component of the calculation. Compare full HP with the “Set to 1 HP” button to see the change without altering the species or ball.
Do not enter zero HP: a fainted target cannot be caught in a normal wild battle. The calculator accepts current HP from 1 up to the maximum HP entered.
In this Emerald model, sleep and freeze use a 2× status modifier. Paralysis, poison, and burn use 1.5×. No status uses 1×. Select the condition the target actually has when the ball is thrown.
A damaging status can end an encounter before the planned number of attempts. The repeated-throw estimate keeps HP and status fixed; it does not simulate battle turns or damage.
If one throw has probability p, the chance of at least one capture in n unchanged attempts is 1 − (1 − p)n. For example, a hypothetical 10% single-throw chance gives about 65.13% over ten attempts.
The average number of attempts is 1 ÷ p. At 10%, that average is ten throws, but some captures take one throw and others take far more. The 50%, 90%, and 95% rows show probability targets rather than deadlines.
This tool uses Emerald’s normal wild-battle capture calculation, including integer rounding and the four shake checks. It applies the ball bonus to the base rate, combines that with HP, then applies the status modifier. A modified rate of 255 or more succeeds automatically.
Custom ball bonuses cover an effective multiplier you already know; they do not automatically check turn count, typing, location, or Pokédex conditions. Safari Zone encounters, scripted capture restrictions, and later-generation mechanics are outside this calculator’s scope.
No. Those games use different capture mechanics. This page calculates normal wild-battle odds using Pokémon Emerald’s Generation III rules.
The game rounds intermediate values to integers. Small changes can therefore produce the same shake threshold and capture probability.
It succeeds in an eligible normal wild encounter. This calculator does not model trainer battles or encounters in which capture is blocked.
With unchanged inputs, this model gives each throw the same probability. Previous failures do not create a guaranteed future capture. Conditional balls require their effective bonus to be updated when conditions change.
Choose “Custom ball bonus” and enter the effective Emerald multiplier for your situation. The tool does not determine whether that ball’s bonus conditions are met.
The calculator runs in your browser and does not store encounter inputs or call an external calculation service.
