About Nebulosity

Nebulosity is a GPU‑accelerated volumetric plugin for Adobe After Effects that generates nebulae, galaxies, clouds and smoke. It builds volumes from Noise, Layers and Ramps, with density calculated from noise combined with layers used as masks. Users define the base volume shape as a box or sphere and can modify it using custom layers in Cut or Extrude mode. Up to three noise layers may be applied, each offering Volume, Spiral or Inverted FBM scattering types, and can be animated with an Evolution slider. Emission sources include Color, Layer or Gradient, with gradient distribution options of Density, Radial from the center, or Noise. Ramps can mask the volume and a Feather Ramp smooths edges. The plugin is compatible with After Effects CC 2014 through the 2025 release.

Features

  • GPU-accelerated volumetric rendering that visualizes density with a raymarching algorithm
  • Base bounding shape set as a box or sphere, customizable via custom layers in Cut or Extrude mode
  • Density from up to three noise layers with Volume, Spiral and Inverted FBM scattering types, each tunable and animated via an Evolution slider
  • Emission source from Color, Layer or Gradient, with gradient distribution by Density, Radial from center or Noise
  • Volume masking with Ramps and edge smoothing through a Feather Ramp
  • Density calculated from Noise combined with Layers used as Masks and Ramps

Best for

Artists who need GPU‑accelerated volumetric effects such as nebulae, clouds, smoke or galaxies directly within After Effects.

Frequently asked questions

Does Nebulosity work with After Effects 2025?

Yes. Nebulosity lists compatibility with Adobe After Effects 2025 as well as earlier versions back to CC 2014.

What noise types does Nebulosity offer for scattering?

Nebulosity offers three scattering noise types: Volume noise, Spiral noise and Inverted FBM noise, which can be used in up to three layers.

How does Nebulosity emit color across a volume?

Color can be emitted from a solid Color, a Layer, or a Gradient. In Gradient mode the distribution may follow Density, Radial (center‑based) or Noise, with optional noise influence on the distribution.

Is Nebulosity free?

The catalog marks Nebulosity as free, but licensing terms may change; users should verify the current status on the developer’s page.
