About Split Blur

Split Blur is a kaleidoscopic blur effect by Satori for After Effects and Premiere Pro. It divides the image into copies arranged evenly on a circle around the original, creating a painterly result. The plugin can target overall luminance, separate RGB channels, or a single Red, Green, Blue, or Alpha channel. Split Count controls the number of copies, while Splits Rotation adjusts their angle. Curve controls map pixel luminosity to blur distance, and edge handling options include Wrap, Mirror, Repeat Last, and Transparent. Depth maps from 3D renders or footage can serve as an intensity source. Version 1.5.0 added adaptive Twirl Angle rotation and a Twirl Intensity Source. The plugin supports After Effects and Premiere Pro releases from CS6 through the 2026 versions.

Features

  • Channel targeting via overall luminance (Luma), separate RGB components, or a single Red, Green, Blue, or Alpha channel
  • Split Count sets how many copies the image is divided into, spaced evenly on a circle, with Splits Rotation to change the angle and a Splits Graph to visualise the configuration
  • Curve controls (Curve, Curve Phase, and Curve Floor) that map pixel luminosity to blur distance, with a Curve Graph for reference
  • Twirl controls including Twirl Curve Smoothness, Twirl Curve Floor, and a Twirl Curve Graph
  • Edge handling with Wrap, Mirror, Repeat Last, and Transparent modes
  • Depth map of a 3D render or footage usable as an intensity source

Best for

Creating kaleidoscopic, painterly blur effects in After Effects and Premiere Pro, with optional depth‑map driven intensity.

Frequently asked questions

Which After Effects and Premiere Pro versions does Split Blur support?

Split Blur runs on After Effects releases from CS6 through the 2026 version, including CC 2014‑CC 2019 and 2020‑2026, and on Premiere Pro versions spanning the same range, from CS6 to 2026.

What did the Split Blur 1.5.0 update add?

Version 1.5.0 introduced the Twirl Angle feature for adaptive rotation based on luminosity, added a Twirl Intensity Source to drive twirl from a separate layer, and raised the maximum Blur Level to 2048.

Can Split Blur use a depth map as its intensity source?

Yes. Split Blur can use the depth map of a 3D render or footage as an intensity source, allowing that data to control blur distance and twirl effects.

Is Split Blur free?

The catalog lists Split Blur as free, but the developer’s licensing page indicates that registration may be required for a full, watermark‑free version.
