About Half Knife

Half Knife is a Blender addon designed to accelerate the knife cutting workflow. Users can initiate a cut by pressing K with or without a prior selection, and a maximum of ten initial vertices may be chosen for performance reasons. The tool allows multicuts from face or edge mode, treating a selected edge as two vertices and a selected face as its constituent vertices. Modal shortcuts include Shift to disable snapping, Z to cut through geometry, Ctrl to snap to the center of a face, Alt for an alternate center snap, C for half or quarter‑angle constraints, and H for Altitude mode which creates orthogonal edges. An optional “Cut without preview” setting can be enabled in the Add‑on Keymaps tab, allowing cuts without mouse button presses. The addon is compatible with Blender 4.5 LTS and newer, but it does not fully replace Blender’s native knife tool and may produce broken geometry on concave ngons.

Features

  • Cut with or without an initial selection: press K, then click to set the end of the cut
  • Multicuts from face or edge mode, with a maximum of 10 initial vertices
  • Modal options including Shift to turn off snapping and Z to cut through
  • Ctrl snaps to center, including the middle of a face; Alt uses an alternate snap to center
  • C applies an angle constraint, snapping to half or quarter angles between the starting point and linked edges
  • H enables Altitude mode, creating an orthogonal edge from the selected point to the edge you point at
  • ‘Cut without preview’ option, enabled in the Keymaps tab, for cutting without pressing mouse buttons

Best for

Blender modeling artists who need a quick, modal‑rich knife tool for precise mesh cuts and snapping options.

Frequently asked questions

Does Half Knife work with Blender 4.5 LTS and newer?

Yes. Half Knife lists compatibility with Blender 4.5 LTS and newer, and it has been tested on earlier versions such as Blender 2.91.

How do I cut without pressing mouse buttons in Half Knife?

Enable the “Cut without preview” option in the add‑on’s Keymaps tab within Blender preferences; then cuts can be performed without pressing mouse buttons.

What modal options does Half Knife support during a cut?

During a cut, Shift disables snapping, Z cuts through, Ctrl snaps to the center of a face, Alt uses an alternate center snap, C constrains the cut to half or quarter angles, and H activates Altitude mode for orthogonal edges.

Does Half Knife work with modifiers?

Half Knife can work with modifiers, but you must disable the “On cage” option for each modifier to ensure cuts follow the intended geometry.

Is Half Knife free and what license does it use?

Half Knife is free and distributed under the GNU General Public License v3.0 or later; no special permissions are required for installation or use.
