Handy Weight Edit is a free Blender add-on that lets you edit vertex weights directly in Edit mode, using selection tools and mouse-wheel adjustments for precise control.

About Handy Weight Edit
Handy Weight Edit provides an alternative to brush‑based weight painting by operating inside Blender’s Edit mode. You select vertices and adjust their weight values with the mouse wheel, choosing either a uniform value for a whole area or a per‑vertex gradient for fine‑tuned borders. Standard Edit mode tools such as loop select, lasso select, X‑ray view, and hide/unhide remain available throughout the workflow.
The add‑on includes operators to smooth weights, copy the last selected vertex’s weight, mirror weights symmetrically or asymmetrically with custom name prefixes/suffixes, and switch or isolate bone influence groups. Validation tools check that each vertex totals one weight and flag vertices exceeding a configured maximum number of groups. You can also limit the number of groups and remove very low weights to improve performance on lower‑end platforms. An Import/Export Weight feature lets you back up and restore skinning data. Documentation and a demo video detail each operator.
Features
- Adjust weight on selected vertices with the mouse wheel (customizable hotkeys), using a uniform method or a per-vertex gradient method
- Smooth Weight, Copy Weight from the last selected vertex, and a basic Normalize operator
- Mirror Weight in symmetric and asymmetric modes, with custom prefix and suffix naming
- Switch Bone Influenced Groups and Isolate Active Bone, with a custom highlight option to visualize the bone
- Limit max weight groups and remove weights below a set threshold to optimize performance on lower-end platforms
- Validation operators to check that each vertex’s total weight equals one and to flag vertices exceeding a set weight group limit
- Import/Export Weight for backing up character skinning progress
Best for
Precise vertex‑level weight editing in Blender, especially for game‑engine preparation and detailed character skinning.
Frequently asked questions
How does Handy Weight Edit differ from brush weight painting?
Handy Weight Edit works in Edit mode, letting you select individual vertices and adjust their weight values directly with the mouse wheel, rather than painting with brushes. It offers both uniform and gradient methods while retaining standard selection tools.
Can Handy Weight Edit back up my character skinning progress?
Yes. The add‑on includes an Import/Export Weight feature that allows you to back up and restore your character’s skinning progress.
Does Handy Weight Edit help prepare weights for game engines?
The add‑on provides operators that enforce a total weight of one per vertex, flag vertices that exceed a set maximum number of weight groups, limit group counts, and remove low‑weight values, helping meet common game‑engine requirements.
Does Handy Weight Edit work with Blender 4.4.1?
The add‑on references Blender 4.4.1 and notes a display bug affecting the armature “in front” effect when using the Isolate Active Bone toggle. A custom highlight option can be enabled to work around this issue.
Is Handy Weight Edit free?
Handy Weight Edit is listed as free in the catalog, but licensing terms may change, so verify the current details on the developer’s page before relying on it.
