Layer Painter is a free Blender addon (2.82+) that adds a layer‑based material workflow with masks, filters and baking, generating node trees automatically for PBR and stylized textures.
Developed by Joshua Knauber.

About Layer Painter
Layer Painter adds a layer system to Blender that automatically builds the node tree in the background, allowing faster creation of complex materials compared with manual node setups. The addon works inside Blender (versions 2.82 and newer) and provides real‑time feedback through the Eehee viewport while painting and editing. Users can add, move, group, hide, and blend layers, and each layer operates on the Principled BSDF’s PBR channels using values, textures or node groups. Masks may be hand‑painted, baked, or procedural, and filters can modify hue or apply vector effects such as pixelation, blurring, and an Anti‑Tile filter. Baking options include Ambient Occlusion, Bevel Masks, normal maps, or the entire material to PBR textures for use in Blender or external applications. The catalog entry references a legacy build that is no longer updated; an open‑source community version now exists on GitHub.
Features
- Layer stack to add, move and group layers, with control over channel visibility, blending modes and opacity
- Layers based on the Principled BSDF’s PBR channels, using values, textures or node groups per channel
- Mask system with hand-painted, baked or procedural masks, plus custom mask node groups
- Filters for adjusting properties like hue, and vector fx for pixelating or blurring, including an Anti-Tile effect against repetition
- Baking of Ambient Occlusion, Bevel Masks and normal maps, plus baking the entire material to PBR textures
- Custom texture libraries and import functions, with quick creation of textures to paint on
