About pt_Multiplane

pt_Multiplane is a script for After Effects that adds motion and depth to still images by converting layered Photoshop or Illustrator files into 3‑D multiplanes. It applies expressions that let you move layers freely along the z‑axis without changing the look of the shot from the original camera position. The script can target selected layers or all layers, and includes an Auto Arrange feature that distributes layers within a specified depth range, optionally randomising placement. Null controllers are added for layers that were previously animated or scaled, with options to keep or delete them after adjustments. Users may choose between a 1‑node camera (position only) or a 2‑node camera (with point of interest) and select a lens preset for the multiplane camera. A Bake/Remove option strips the scale expressions when they are no longer needed. Compatibility is listed from After Effects CS4 through the 2025 release.

Features

  • Auto Arrange distributes layers along the z-axis within a specified range, with an option to place them randomly inside that range
  • Null controllers for layers that were previously animated or scaled, with an option to always use nulls and the ability to delete them to remove
  • Choice of a 1 node camera with a Position property or a 2 node camera that adds a Point of Interest
  • Lens preset selection for the multiplane camera
  • Apply Multiplane to selected layers or all layers, setting up the scale expressions that compensate when layers move on the z-axis
  • Bake/Remove option to strip out the scale expressions once adjustments are finished
