About Recursive Mosaic

Recursive Mosaic provides a pixelation effect for Adobe After Effects and Premiere Pro. The plugin creates an initial grid and recursively subdivides each cell until a user‑defined detail level is reached, producing a blocky appearance while optionally retaining specific details. Users can select which color channels are affected—Luminosity, RGB, or individual red, green, blue, or alpha channels. Mosaic intensity controls the overall blockiness, while Grid Width and Grid Height set the starting subdivision dimensions. Maximum Iterations limits recursion depth, and an Intensity Source parameter lets a different layer or Premiere track drive the effect. The current version adds multi‑frame rendering, curve modulation of the mosaic mapping, and native Apple Silicon (M1) support. Compatibility spans After Effects and Premiere Pro releases from CS6 through the 2024 versions, including all listed CC and yearly builds.

Features

  • Channels selection: Luminosity uses all color channels in sync, RGB uses them separately, or the effect applies only to red, green, blue or alpha
  • Mosaic intensity sets how blocky the image is, from preserving the original to allowing only the largest blocks
  • Intensity Source uses a different layer, or a Premiere track, as the source for the effect
  • Grid Width and Grid Height set the initial horizontal and vertical subdivisions
  • Maximum Iterations limits the recursions: lower values generate large blocks, higher values produce finer sub-blocks
  • Curve modulation of the mosaic mapping
  • Multi-frame rendering and Apple Silicon (M1) support

Best for

Artists and motion‑graphics designers who need custom pixelation or JPEG‑artifact effects in After Effects or Premiere Pro.

Frequently asked questions

What After Effects and Premiere Pro versions does Recursive Mosaic support?

Recursive Mosaic supports After Effects versions from CS6 through 2024, including CC 2014, CC 2015, CC 2015.3, CC 2017‑2023, and After Effects 2024. It supports Premiere Pro versions from CS6 through 2024, covering the same yearly releases.

Does Recursive Mosaic run natively on Apple Silicon Macs?

Yes. Recursive Mosaic includes native Apple Silicon (M1) support as a universal macOS binary, allowing it to run without translation on compatible Macs.

Can Recursive Mosaic use a separate layer to drive the mosaic?

Yes. The Intensity Source parameter allows a separate layer in After Effects or a track in Premiere Pro to drive the mosaic effect.

Is Recursive Mosaic free?

The catalog lists Recursive Mosaic as free, but licensing terms may change; check the developer Satori’s website for the current status before downloading.
