About Volna
Volna is an advanced stroke plugin for Adobe After Effects that generates strokes directly from mask shapes. It can use a single mask or blend two masks into a new shape that carries multiple strokes. Each stroke may be filled with unlimited‑point gradients, distorted using Perlin noise, sine functions, or alpha noise, and rendered as lines or points. Thickness along the path is controlled with a ramp, and parametric arrows can be added to stroke ends. The plugin includes points mode with random rotation, rotation along the path, and rotation noise, plus a noise ramp to limit distortion to a segment. Audio‑driven noise lets sound influence amplitude, frequency, offsets, or evolution. Additional controls such as base‑points density ramps help maintain shape integrity when masks are blended. Volna supports After Effects 2025 through 2020 and Creative Cloud versions from CC 2019 back to CC 2014.
Features
- Parametric arrows at the line ends that can be fine-tuned and animated individually
- Thickness ramp control to set and animate stroke thickness along the path
- Gradient control with unlimited color points and three interpolation modes, plus a cross-lines gradient that can be added or multiplied over the stroke gradient, then offset and scaled
- Points mode with random rotation and offset, rotation along path, and rotation noise using three noise modes and a rotation ramp
- Noise distortion with amplitude, frequency, offsets and evolution, a noise ramp to define the affected segment, and audio-driven noise
- Artistic stroke styles via alpha noise, ramp and sine functions for rough strokes, soft chalk, or dashes
- Base points density ramp to remap points density and compensate for blending distortion
Best for
Motion designers who need stylized, mask‑based stroke graphics with gradient, noise, and audio‑responsive options.
Frequently asked questions
Which After Effects versions does Volna support?
Volna runs on After Effects 2025, 2024, 2023, 2022, 2021, 2020 and Creative Cloud releases CC 2019, CC 2018, CC 2017, CC 2015.3, CC 2015, and CC 2014.
Is Volna free to use?
The listing indicates Volna is free, but users should verify current licensing terms on the developer’s website before downloading.
Can Volna react to audio?
Yes. Volna includes audio‑driven noise, allowing audio input to affect noise amplitude, frequency, offsets, or evolution.
Can Volna blend more than one mask?
Volna can blend one or two masks into a new shape that carries multiple strokes, with a density ramp to manage point distribution.
What stroke styles can Volna create?
Volna can create rough strokes, soft‑chalk looks, or dashed lines using alpha noise, ramp and sine functions, alongside gradient fills and arrowheads.
