About Sheffield Softworks Keyper
Keyper uses Apple’s machine‑learning models to isolate people (and, on macOS 14 Sonoma or later, other subjects) from their backgrounds in single frames. It runs as an FXFactory plug‑in for After Effects, Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, Final Cut Pro X and Motion on both Apple Silicon and Intel Macs. The plug‑in provides keyframeable preprocessing controls (brightness, saturation, contrast, sharpness, LUT) that do not alter the output image, and offers matte processing modes (Full, Outline, Inline, Core, Combo) plus output formats such as Composite, Matte, Matte over Background, and Colored Matte with Alpha. Version 2.1 adds a Subject detector for macOS 14 Sonoma and later. Keyper requires the Noise Industries FxFactory host, which is available as a free download; FxFactory Pro is a paid version with identical system requirements.
Features
- Extracts people from backgrounds with Machine Learning, without a green screen or prepared backdrops
- Applies filters and effects separately to the people and/or the backgrounds
- Matte processing modes — Full, Outline, Inline, Core and Combo, with Outline, Inline and Core controlled by Width and Edge
- Keyframeable preprocessing for brightness, saturation, contrast, sharpness and LUT loading that does not alter the output image
- Output offerings including Composite, Matte, Matte over Background, and Colored Matte with Alpha
- Patch control to fill a hole in the matte, block out unwanted subjects, or include only the person covered by the patch
- Subject detector on macOS 14 Sonoma and later that identifies human and non-human subjects
Best for
Video editors using After Effects, Premiere Pro or DaVinci Resolve who need to separate people from backgrounds without green‑screen shooting and apply effects independently.
Frequently asked questions
Does Keyper work with After Effects, Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve?
Yes. Keyper operates as an FXFactory plug‑in in After Effects, Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, Final Cut Pro X and Motion on macOS, supporting both Apple Silicon and Intel CPUs.
Does Keyper track people between frames?
No. Keyper processes each frame independently; it does not track subjects across frames.
What does the Subject detector in Keyper 2.1 do?
The Subject detector, available in version 2.1 on macOS 14 Sonoma or newer, can identify both human and non‑human subjects, extending the existing person detector to improve selection in some cases.
What matte and output options does Keyper 2.0 provide?
Keyper 2.0 provides matte modes (Full, Outline, Inline, Core, Combo) with width and edge controls, and output options including Composite, Matte, Matte over Background, and Colored Matte with Alpha; it also adds a Patch tool for manual matte adjustments.
Is Keyper free to use?
Keyper itself is listed as free, but it requires the Noise Industries FxFactory host, which is a free download; FxFactory Pro is a paid version that uses the same system requirements.
