About Dot Pixels

Dot Pixels is a Rowbyte native plugin for After Effects and Premiere Pro that transforms footage into circular or ring‑shaped pixel blocks. Instead of traditional square pixels, each block becomes a circle or a ring, and a shading mode can simulate spherical or torus objects. Parameters include Outer Roundness (adjusts circle size), Inner Radius (controls ring thickness), Shading Type (spherical or ring) and Shading Amount, plus a Fill Background option that lets you set a background colour when needed. In After Effects the plugin supports 32‑bit floating point processing. Version 2.7.5 was released on April 21, 2025 and is compatible with multiple releases of both host applications.

Features

  • Pixelates an image into circles and rings
  • Shading option to simulate spherical and torus objects
  • Outer Roundness parameter sets each block’s outer roundness; increasing it decreases each circle’s size
  • Inner Radius controls the inner circle radius in a ring; increasing it makes the ring thinner
  • Shading Type (spherical or ring) with an adjustable shading amount, off by default
  • Fill Background checkbox with a BG Color option; background is transparent by default
  • 32-bit floating point support (After Effects only)

Best for

After Effects and Premiere Pro users who need to pixelate footage into circles or rings, with control over roundness, ring thickness, and optional shading.

Frequently asked questions

Which After Effects and Premiere Pro versions does Dot Pixels support?

Dot Pixels works with After Effects 2025, 2024, 2023, 2022, 2021, 2020 and CC releases back to CC 2014, as well as CS6. For Premiere Pro it supports 2020, CC 2019 through CC 2014, and CS6.

Does Dot Pixels support 32-bit floating point color?

The plugin provides 32‑bit floating point support in After Effects only; Premiere Pro does not list this capability.

Is Dot Pixels free?

The listing indicates Dot Pixels is free, but licensing terms may change, so verify the current status on the developer’s page before downloading.

How does Dot Pixels create rings instead of solid circles?

Rings are created by increasing the Inner Radius parameter, which enlarges the inner circle of each pixel block, making the block appear as a thinner ring. Outer Roundness adjusts the overall size of each block.
