About RE:Vision Effects SmoothKit

SmoothKit is a filter suite for Adobe After Effects and Premiere Pro that expands the standard blur and sharpen tools. It provides edge‑preserving blur, a proprietary sharpening method that reduces ringing, and independent control of luminance, chrominance, or each RGB channel. Additional filters include a jaggie‑reducer, a less blocky median filter, and intelligent reduction of MPEG block artifacts. Compound blur lets a grayscale image modulate blur size per pixel, and directional filtering offers per‑pixel direction and strength controls. In After Effects, spline‑based blur direction is available; Premiere Pro lacks this feature. A temporal filter enables multi‑frame processing, while Z‑blur uses depth maps for depth‑of‑field effects with an adjustable focal point. Version 4.0.3 adds an Apple Silicon fix running under Rosetta 2. SmoothKit is also bundled in the RE:Vision Effects Effections collections.

Features

  • Blur and sharpening filter set that complements and extends basic blurs and sharpens
  • Edge-preserving blur that softens areas while keeping sharp edges intact
  • Proprietary sharpening technique that significantly reduces ringing artifacts
  • Selective filtering of luminance, chrominance, or each RGB channel independently
  • Jaggie-reducing filter for staircasing plus a less blocky median filter and intelligent MPEG block-artifact reduction
  • Compound blur using optional grayscale images to modify blur size per pixel
  • Z-blur depth-of-field control using depth maps with an adjustable focal point

Best for

Artists and editors using After Effects or Premiere Pro who need precise, edge‑aware blur and sharpen controls, depth‑based Z‑blur, and tools to mitigate compression artifacts.

Frequently asked questions

Does RE:Vision Effects SmoothKit work with After Effects 2024?

Yes. SmoothKit lists compatibility with Adobe After Effects from CS6 through the CC releases and the 2020, 2021, and 2022‑24 versions, which includes After Effects 2024.

Does RE:Vision Effects SmoothKit run on Apple Silicon Macs?

SmoothKit runs on Apple Silicon Macs via Rosetta 2; a fix for Apple Silicon users was added in version 4.0.3, but native execution is not provided.

Are the spline blur direction controls available in Premiere Pro?

No. The spline‑based blur direction controls are only available in After Effects; Premiere Pro does not include this feature.

Is RE:Vision Effects SmoothKit free?

The catalog marks SmoothKit as free, but the plugin uses an activation system and may be bundled with paid Effections collections, so the cost could change.
