Drag & Drop Import adds a drag‑and‑drop workflow to Blender, letting users import models, images, video, and other assets by dropping files from the file explorer into the 3D Viewport or Outliner. It supports over 30 formats and works with Blender 4.0.

About Drag & Drop Import
Drag & Drop Import enables users to bring files into Blender by dragging them from the file explorer into the 3D Viewport or Outliner. A left‑click drag imports with default settings; a right‑click drag or Ctrl+left‑click opens the import options. The add‑on handles more than 30 formats, including FBX, GLB, OBJ, USD, BLEND, PNG, VDB, HDR and EXR, as well as image‑specific drop menus for planes, reference images, or background images. Images can be dragged directly from web pages, and multiple images may be dropped in the Shader Editor, with automatic node socket connections. Whole‑folder imports are organized into Collections, and VDB sequences and HDRI setup are supported. The project is unmaintained because Blender now includes native drag‑and‑drop importing. It runs on Blender 4.0, with Windows and Intel‑based macOS builds available; an Apple Silicon build is in development.

Frequently asked questions
Does Drag & Drop Import work with Blender 4.0?
Yes. Drag & Drop Import runs on Blender 4.0, though dropping images directly onto the Principled BSDF node does not work because the API has not been updated for the node’s new appearance.
Which operating systems does Drag & Drop Import support?
The add‑on is available for Windows and for macOS on Intel CPUs (marked as a beta build). A build for Apple Silicon (M‑series) is still in development and not yet released.
What file types can Drag & Drop Import handle?
It supports over 30 formats, including 3D model types such as FBX, GLB, OBJ, USD, BLEND; image and texture formats like PNG, JPG, EXR, HDR; vector and CAD files (SVG, DXF); video (MP4, MOV); volumetric VDB; SketchUp SKP; and Python scripts (PY).
How do I change the import settings when dragging a file in Drag & Drop Import?
Use a right‑click drag or hold the Ctrl key while left‑click dragging to open the import options before the file is imported. This works for both individual files and folders.
Is Drag & Drop Import free?
The add‑on is listed as free. Licensing details are provided on the developer’s page, and no paid subscription is required.
