About Quick Groups (Instances)

Quick Groups (Instances) replaces Blender’s default Ctrl+G shortcut with a workflow that creates group instances from selected objects. Pressing Ctrl+G creates a group instance; F9 lets you set its centre and name. The group is edited in a dedicated Library scene opened with Tab, and returning to the original scene is done by deselecting everything and pressing Tab again. Ctrl+Alt+G ungroups, while Ctrl+Shift+G provides advanced options such as making the instance single‑user or swapping it for another object. Because the add‑on relies on regular Blender instances, blend files containing these groups remain fully usable by users who do not have the add‑on installed. Version 1.0.3 adds warning messages for missing Library scenes or misplaced instances. The add‑on is released under the GNU GPL v3 or later and requires Blender 4.2 LTS or newer.

Features

  • Ctrl+G creates a group instance from selected objects, with F9 to set the group’s center and name
  • Tab opens the group’s edit mode in a Library scene; deselecting everything and pressing Tab returns to the scene
  • Ctrl+Alt+G ungroups selected groups
  • Ctrl+Shift+G opens advanced options including make single user and change instance, such as replacing one chair with another
  • Uses regular Blender instances, so blend files containing these groups can be shared with users who don’t have the add-on installed
  • Warning messages flag when a Library scene is missing or an instance isn’t in the Library, added in version 1.0.3

Best for

Blender users who prefer a grouping workflow built on native instances and need files to stay portable to collaborators without the add‑on.
